He keeps telling us and in Genisys, the Terminator is back once more.

Summer cinema is upon us this July as audiences are reunited with two thunder buddies in Ted 2, head back in time to secure victory against the machines in Terminator Genisys and see Paul Rudd transform into an ant-sized superhero in Marvel’s latest release. Below are four of the best releases to get down to the cinema for this next month.

True Story – 24th July

James Franco and Jonah Hill take a break from their comedic performances in a straight-faced drama about the relationship between a fallen journalist (Hill) and a man accused of murdering his own family (Franco), who has attempted to take the former’s identity. ‘Based on actual events’ the developing bond between the two appears to be a desperate man’s last act to unveil the truths of his crime but at the same time there is a suggestion that it is far more sinister, that Franco’s character is manipulating the journalist for his own gains, whatever reason that may be, all of which is revealed as the True Story is uncovered. From what information is readily available, the film has many mysterious qualities and provokes a series of questions, as all good thrillers do. A sign of something promising.

Inside Out – 24th July

Personally speaking, this is easily the most anticipated film release of the month. Made by Pixar, the animation film’s premises centres on five personified emotions that occupy the mind of eleven-year-old Riley, a little girl who is struggling to adapt to new surroundings. The emotions: Joy, Anger, Disgust, Fear and Sadness control Riley’s subconscious and try to steer her around her life’s obstacles. The trailer is a must-see and features an almost unedited scene which captures the sense of fun, humour and imagination that Pixar have once more masterfully developed, all of which feels like a genuine reflection of the film because they have not cherry-picked the film’s best bits.

Southpaw – 24th July

A climatic tale of a successful boxer who battles to repair his life after descending into a state of despair following the death of his wife and the removal of his daughter from his care. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as the main character, Billy Hope. with a support cast that features Rachel Adams, Forest Whitaker, Naomie Harris, 50 Cent and Rita Ora. There isn’t anything particularly novel here but the film looks like an intense and powerful journey of a family man’s determination to reconnect with his estranged daughter.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation – 30th July

Offering something altogether different, Ethan Hunt and crew return once more in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. This time around the IMF (The Impossible Missions Force, not the International Monetary Fund) are forced to disband even as they face their greatest threat yet, a rogue organisation referred to as the Syndicate.  In what could be his last outing as Ethan Hunt, Tom Cruise is supported by returning trio Ving Rhames, Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg with Alec Baldwin joining a cast which is led by Edge of Tomorrow and Jack Reacher director, Christopher McQuarrie, who is once more united with Cruise. Expect grander action scenes, bigger stakes and inconceivable gadgets with the same sprinkling of light humour in what is always a welcome return to America’s own secret agent franchise.

April Film Releases 2013

After a dull March April picks up the pace with some star-studded blockbusters and exciting movies filled with promise.

Spring Breakers

Release Date: 5th April

Undoubtedly this is going to be a bad film. Though the cast of Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez and Ashley Benson attract the eye, it’s for all the wrong reasons. Nevertheless I know I won’t be able to resist a watch, especially as there’s an overriding desire to adore it. I mean, it’s a film featuring several assertive scantily clad beauties breaking the law, what’s not to love? It’s every man’s guilty pleasure, in a freely available film at least.

Erased/The Expatriate

Release Date: 5th April

I’m not entirely sure what the actual title of this film is, some trailers use “Erased” whilst other publications use “The Expatriate” so feel free to be totally confused. The film follows an ex-CIA agent who is forced to go on the run after his employers erase all memory of his existence as part of a wide-reaching international conspiracy and, as seems to be the going trend in current film releases, the antagonist brings his child along for the ride too. Featuring ex-Bond girl Olga Kurylenko, Harvey Dent, a cyclops and an ugly Taylor Swift (kinda) the Erased Expatriate experience looks to be a poor man’s Bourne Identity but nevertheless one that may call for a cheeky viewing.

Oblivion

Release Date: 12th April

From the producer of The Rise of the Planet of the Apes and the director of Tron: Legacy, Oblivion tells the tale of Jack Harper, one of the remaining repairmen stationed on Earth, who rescues a “beautiful stranger” from her crashed spacecraft prompting a chain of events that place the fate of humanity in his hands. With a reported £120,000,000 budget, an excellent cast including Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko (again) Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and a prestigious behind the scenes crew, the bar is set pretty high for Oblivion. Unfortunately it seems to have the John Carter factor about it, beautiful cinematography but ultimately a massive flop, though I hope it delivers.

The Place Beyond The Pines

Release Date: 12th April

Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond The Pines is one of the most exciting film releases of the month. This gritty, hard-hitting drama sees a motorcycle stuntman (Ryan Gosling) turn to bank robbing to provide for his child, whom he unexpectedly discovered from a previous lover (Eva Mendes). Trying to catch the lawbreaker, an ambitious cop (Bradley Cooper) tries to bring the stuntman down, though he is impeded by a corrupt force (led by Ray Liotta). Although I mentioned it is set to be one of the best films out this month, I do have my concerns about how this will happen. The expectations are high due to positive reactions from American audiences but, looking at the cast and at the rather straight forward story line I don’t see how I’m going to be blown back by it. If anything this appears to be more of an experience and less of a film.

Scary Movie 5

Release Date: 12th April

Does look entertaining.

Personally I’m not a massive fan of spoof movies, they’re usually of poor taste and only seem to be able to conjure the crudest of jokes. Scary Movie’s however usually hold some degree of taste and the way they make subtle, and some not so subtle, movie references, can be quite satisfying to watch. Some of the name’s in the latest edition include: Charlie Sheen, Ashley Tisdale, Lindsay Lohan, Terry Crews and Bow Wow alongside a whole ensemble of C list celebrities. Comedies rarely make great films because they offer a totally different movie experience, one that usually produces more laughter and general sense of fun, they’re perfect for the cinema, which is why I’m cautiously looking forward to this release.

Olympus Has Fallen

Release Date: 17th April

‘MURICA. MORGAN FREEMAN. EXPLOSIONS. TERROISTS. F’YEAH.

IRON MAN 3

Iron Man 3

Release Date: 26th April

Tony Stark returns for a fourth appearance as Iron Man, this time up against the Tangerine or the Mandarin or someone like that. If it were any other superhero I’d be crying out for the writers to call it a day but there’s something about this latest collection of Marvel superhero films that is just so charming. The usually suspects are back in this third installment: Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Bettany and Don Cheadle are included and we also get to see Ben Kingsley but more exciting, Bingbing Fan. Yeah, that’s right. Bingbing Fan.
